Business strategies of small businesses

Small organizations and individuals who do not have a notorious differentiation in their value propositions need to develop non-influential strategies because they do not have the necessary power to develop influential strategies.

These strategies are implicitly a reactive approach to reality and basically depend on the capacity to adapt to the trends of an environment.

This adaptation has to happen instantly, that is why these organizations or individuals do not invest in assets to be used in the future. If they are businesses they do not consider the return on investment as a relevant indicator.

Non-influential strategies do not define maximal strategies –to go beyond boundaries-and minimum strategies -to guarantee survival- because they can only happen within the boundaries of the present activity. That is why these concepts cannot be understood and are usually confused with more success (misinterpreting a maximal strategy) or less success (misinterpreting a minimum strategy).

They have only intrinsic maximal and minimum strategies within the limits in which they work to achieve their goals.

The growth of non-influential individuals or organizations depends on what happens in the environment. If the wind blows in the direction they are going, they will be able to grow. If the wind doesn’t blow, they will become stagnated survivors, and if the wind blows in the opposite direction, they will tend to disappear.

At an operational level, their energy conservation function is given by their capacity of choosing the adequate operational benchmarks to follow. At a strategic level, their energy conservation function is given by the power they can exert on the niches where they are active.

The purpose of non-influential strategies is to follow the environment (over-adaptation), building the necessary justification to do so and having the power to exert a certain level of influence in order to be able to be accepted as a follower of the environment.
